I think we can all agree that the NBC TODAY SHOW is “the bigs.” The “the best of the best,” “the crème de la crème,” “the 1% if you will.” The best anchors, the best reporters – only the best. Setting aside the obvious bias of everyone on the show, it is rather surprising when they make really dumb mistakes. Like several weeks ago when Kristen Welker opined that Presidents usually make their first overseas trip to Canada or Mexico. Now, when a nobody Blogger, like myself, makes a dumb mistake no one cares. Few are even aware of my mistakes and certainly no one would ever pay me money to write, much less the hundreds of thousands or even millions that TODAY SHOW on air staff are paid.
Which brings me to this morning. At 7:31 AM they began a report on a Delaware sized chunk of ice that calved off the Carson ice shelf in Antarctica. As one might expect, New York is rather remote from Antarctica so they called on Miguel Almaguer who was on the scene in … Los Angeles??? Well, maybe Miguel has special expertise on Antarctica. There’s a brief exchange of pleasantries and a brief set up for a prerecorded piece Miguel has done.
His report begins. “It may be the most remote, coldest continent on our planet …” Well, Miguel, I think that’s a safe bet. He continued, “… and this morning in this barren tundra …” OK, let me stop here and admit I am not an expert on Antarctica. However, I am fairly certain there’s no tundra there, barren or otherwise. He continued, “… seismic change is under way in the Arctic.” The Arctic??? The Arctic??? So all you young folks keep in mind that you can go to a great party school and still aspire to make the “big bucks” on a top rated TV show.
